BSC collaborated with Greencraft Builders, LLC in Colleyville, TX on a 2009 prototype house called the Colleyville House. This house demonstrates the energy efficiency and durability upgrades that Greencraft currently promotes in all of their products. The Colleyville house is located in Colleyville, TX, about 25 miles North West of Dallas. The house was designed by William Peck and Associates, an award winning architect specializing in sustainable energy efficient architecture.
The design of the Concord Cape began in August of 2008. Architects and engineers at BSC developed the drawing set and specifications for the high performance custom home to be built in Concord, Massachusetts. The house is a Cape Cod style design with 5 bedrooms, 4 full bathrooms, 2 stories plus a finished basement. It is built into an existing neighborhood close to public transportation, restaurants, shops and other community resources. BSC worked closely with the homeowner to design a house that combined the desired design aesthetic, both interior and exterior, with high performance.
It shouldn’t be a surprise that energy would be a hit in Texas—but 8,000 people on the fi rst weekend to tour a home that uses less than half that of a standard new home, and makes the rest itself? There is no magic in the technology and engineering, but clearly builder Jim Sargent and his systems thinking team have created something special at the Building America Zero Energy Home of Lone Star Ranch in Frisco, Texas.Project Team: Anderson Sargent Builders, Barley Pfieffer Architects, Building Science Corporation, EEBA, US DOE Building America ProgramAddress: Dallas, TexasAt the first-of-its-...
Sandstone is a 49-home subdivision located in Ellendale, DE. The project is Colter Construction’s first entry into community-scale development. The company has considerable experience building energy efficient custom homes in Sussex County.
Hamilton Way is a ten-lot subdivision located just outside of Hartford in Farmington, Connecticut. It is a community designed and constructed through a partnership between Landworks Realty and Nelson Construction. Building Science Corporation (BSC) began working with Landworks/Nelson Construction in December 2007 after a meeting at the 2007 EEBA conference between Chris Nelson (owner of Nelson Construction) and Armin Rudd (Principal at BSC) connected the goals of the Building America program with the desires of Nelson Construction to build an energy efficient showcase community in the...

In 1920, when this house was built on the bank of a coastal cove, it served as a summer cottage complete with a boat dock. Over the years, the house has been remodeled, added to, and converted to a year-round residence. Now, as part of the latest renovation, it has undergone a deep energy retrofit which is projected to achieve a 43% source energy savings for the occupants. The National Grid Deep Energy Retrofit (DER) Pilot Program provided technical and financial assistance for the energy saving improvements of the renovation.
Take a look at the Prairie Crossing homes—they are "Heartland" homes that anyone would love to live in, reassuringly traditional. Who would think that they also happen to be among the most sophisticated and finely tuned high performance homes in their region?Project Team: Building Science Corporation, Sturbridge ConstructionAddress: Grayslake, ILDescription: Average 2,700 ft2, three bedroom, 21/2 bath single family homesIn 1996, Prairie Crossing became the first community-scale Building America project in the country. Every home built by Prairie Holdings Corporation has a controlled ventilation system that enhances indoor air quality and comfort by bringing in outside air when needed by the occupants. Typical homes have no way of providing outdoor air in a controlled manner aside from relying on the construction of leaky homes and the whims of the weather (wind and temperature differences). Leaky homes consume energy and tend to be uncomfortable from drafts. Tight homes without controlled ventilation can also have problems due to a build up of odors and other pollutants. The optimum approach for healthy,...
Hilton Head, SC
Primarily as a resort location, Hilton Head Island has a somewhat different residential housing market than other more traditional areas. The market is made up of both year-round occupancy and seasonal occupancy, and the size and cost of new homes range from the very large and expensive to those of more normal size but still higher cost. Most houses are simply “built to code.” High performance and “green” housing practices have not begun to penetrate the market.
