BSP-034: Designs that Work: Cold Climate (Pontiac, MI)

The "Designs that Work" series of climate-specific studies were created by Building Science Corporation for the DOE's Building America Program. Each package includes house plans and a design narrative hightlighting the applied building science principles.
How to Use this Package by BSC — last modified 2007/01/29
An introduction and overview.
Section 1: Introduction by BSC — last modified 2007/01/30
Section 1 introduces the Building America project that lead to the development of this project. The basics of climate-specific design are then discussed along with a description of the cold climate zone.
Section 2: The Basic Cold Climate House by BSC — last modified 2007/01/30
Section 2 describes the architectural characteristics of the basic house, the results of the preliminary energy analysis, and the building enclosure and mechanical system design.
Section 3: Advanced Technologies for a Cold Climate by BSC — last modified 2007/01/30
Moving beyond the basic house, Section 3 discusses pushing the performance of the house towards Net Zero with the addition of geothermal heating and cooling, solar hot water collection and photovoltaics.
