Gary Parsons is a Fellow in Dow Building Solutions Research and Development. He is a LEED Accredited Professional, a licensed residential contractor in the state of Michigan, a member of the Society of Plastics Engineers and a member of ASHRAE.
Since 2006, Parsons has been the technical leader of the Dow Building Solutions “Building Science and Application Development” team which specializes in understanding and developing building enclosure energy management products and systems for residential, commercial and retrofit construction applications. He has technical oversight and leadership of Dow research projects related to building assemblies and field building research as well as product and application development of Dow building system solutions. A couple of recent projects that Parsons has led include:
- Design and construction of the Dow “Wall Assembly Research Center” which is a state-of-the art 1,600 square foot wall system research lab that Dow collaborated with Building Science Corporation on and features over 30 interchangeable wall sections that enable Dow to test various residential and commercial wall systems.
- Design of a 12-home energy efficiency test community in Midland, Michigan, in collaboration with Cobblestone Homes, which is intended to generate scientific, whole-house performance data while providing all of the typical comforts of a rental home to its occupants.
- Design and coordination of a deep-energy retrofit on a home in Midland, Michigan, called the Revitalize Home, where the efficient upgrades will enable an estimated annual energy savings of 30%, while reducing CO2 emissions by 33%.
Parsons holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cincinnati. He joined the Dow Chemical Company in 1982 and has spent 30 years in various Dow divisions including manufacturing, and research and development.
In addition to his work at Dow Building Solutions, Parsons’ industry leadership and involvement include leading the U.S. Department of Energy’s Building America “Cost Effective Energy Retrofit Team” in developing and implementing innovative retrofit technologies primarily in the cold and mixed-humid climate regions that have high adoption rates. He also presents regularly at conferences such as Building Enclosure Science and Technology Conference, Thermal Performance of the Exterior Envelopes of Whole Buildings, RCI, ACI, Westford Symposium on Building Science and others. Parsons has recently published a couple of technical papers including "Structural and Hygrothermal Field Monitoring of Thick Continuously Insulated Wall Assemblies Utilized in a Multi Story Residential Building" and "Three-Coat Stucco Veneer Attachment Schemes for Thick Continuous Insulation (ci) Foam Based on Experimentally Validated Finite Element (FE) Modeling." He is also an Approved Contributing Editor (ACE) for ProudGreenHome.com.
